Follow The Leader

As we took our daily walk this morning we have to begin with a climb up a narrow pathway and we take it in turns to lead the way...

When we got to the top we stopped to get our breath and chatted about this expression follow the leader

We both remember as kids growing up being in the Scouts and Guides respectively and as 'pack leaders' as we were called in our time we can remember saying to our little troop "follow us"

We all know how important that phrase is especially on Facebook don't we!

But it has a whole new meaning in the world of network marketing and leadership in general.

Many network marketing companies describe themselves as "leadership factories" where they help develop the leadership capabilities of their distributors and help them build great teams which of course has the effect of building a business for that person and the business as a whole with the additional income it generates for both parties.

As one of the greatest leadership entrepreneurs John Maxwell said 

"The single biggest way to impact an organisation is to focus on leadership development. There is almost no limit to the potential of an organisation that recruits good people, raises them up as leaders and continually develops them."

The problem we see observing this industry however is that many companies in the network marketing arena and their leaders have a policy of "my way is the only way" and new distributors after trying the "my way" find it isn't their way and they quit

We had our first foray into network marketing back in 2005 

We remember the conversation to this very day

It started with a phone call from a work colleague (who couldn't explain what it was about when we asked the question...

That lead to a "three way" phone call that lead to a hotel presentation and watched a man at the front of the room draw circles on a white board (nowadays you're more likely to see this on a mobile device but you get the picture)

Needless to say as accountants we loved the concept and we joined

Next we were told to make a list of friends and family 

Some came to our home, others we visited in their homes and some went to a hotel meeting... we met people and we 'presented the plan' but most didn't join

Very soon our list of friends and family ran out and people were beginning to avoid us

We were absolutely passionate about the products and the business we were building (probably just as you are) but we found we just weren’t making any money! In fact it was costing us money.  We weren’t even covering our monthly outgoings 

It was costing us time and it just wasn’t working and after 9 weeks of serious hard work all those that joined had left and we had a team of zero.  We were back at square one

It was then we realised we’d been prospecting the wrong people

Needless to say despite loving the model, it was some years later before we tried again but by then the internet had arrived and things were beginning to look very different

BUT we discovered that some companies were not allowing their distributors to have an online presence but the leaders did...

We didn't like the duplicity of this behaviour so we left it on the back burner for a while and took time to hone our online marketing skills over the years as you know if you've read our story

Fast forward to today and things are things are very different 😀

You don't have to necessarily follow your leader's strategies (the my way or no way)

You can build your leadership skills and your organisation using online strategies and attraction marketing and create a business you love and can attract the right people too
