Affiliate Marketing For Retirees : In this article we are going to discuss whether affiliate marketing is something retirees or those approaching retirement should consider as a way of increasing their retirement income or “pension pot”

We feel we are well qualified to write about this subject given that we have been generating a “retirement income” online for nine years now through affiliate marketing. When we started we were in our mid fifties and now in our mid sixties.

We’ve written many books on the subject as well as taught and trained hundreds of people all around the world. It works for us and we firmly believe it can work for you too.

Let’s explain first what affiliate marketing is and how it works

What Is Affiliate Marketing & How Does It Work

There is no need to complicate this. It is simply one person helping another sell something to someone else and in return receiving a payment usually known as a commission. There are various ways and means this is done but suffice to say most affiliate marketing is done online which makes it a perfect solution for retirees or soon to be retirees as it’s a perfect location free business.

In practice affiliate affiliate marketing looks like this and we’ll use ourselves as an example:-

Chris and Susan as affiliate marketers promote (market) a product or products of Peter (the merchant). Stuart (the customer) sees the product being marketed by Chris and Susan and purchases the product. Peter then pays Chris and Susan a commission on that sale. Everyone is happy. The customer, the affiliate and the merchant.

The world really is the oyster for the affiliate marketer (Chris and Susan in this instance). They decide on the type of products they want to promote and then finds different ways to promote (market) those products such as having a website (like this one you are reading this article on), through video on YouTube for example, PPC (pay per click) on Google, Bing, Facebook etc.

The affiliate must find the merchant(s) that sell the products they want to promote and join their affiliate program. They are provided with a unique link to promote the product so that when a customer buys from that link the merchant knows that Chris and Susan made the sale and he can then pay them their commission.

There are lots of places to find products to promote such as Clickbank, Commission Junction, JVZoo, Warrior Forum etc

There are hundreds if not thousands of niches and products that can be sold in this way and we recommend you choose one that best suites you and which you are passionate about. We personally work primarily in the education and training niche and sell digital products within that niche.

What Do You Need To Be An Affiliate Marketer

There are some essential tools you will need to be successful as an affiliate marketer. The ONE you absolutely must have is a computer. Given us retirees want to travel then a laptop computer is perfect for this. So many times we hear of people trying to run an online business on a smart phone or a tablet and it really doesn’t work although they are absolutely great tools to have in combination with a laptop (we couldn’t be without our iphones when we are travelling).

The other essential tool is KNOWLEDGE. We don’t mean you need to be an expert but you do need to know how online marketing works and what you have to do to be successful with it. That’s exactly whey we wanted to promote online business education. Like anything new, you need to know HOW TO DO IT to be successful at it!

The way to gain the necessary knowledge is through on online training program and whilst there are some very good ones there are also some very bad ones and some are outright scams!

Speaking again from experience these are the reasons that we would highlight

Small capital outlay – just a computer to start
Relatively low operating costs
Can be done from anywhere where there is an internet connection
No physical effort
Can be done part time while you are still working if you haven’t yet retired (that’s what we did)
You set your own hours
You are your own boss
No limit to what income you can generate

In summary, affiliate marketing is a great business for someone in or approaching retirement as it gives us flexibility in the hours we work but knowing we are going to need additional income, we can do so while doing something interesting and new.

It is going to involve some work particularly in the early days when it is all new but the thought that you are doing something where you are your own boss and can work the hours you choose is definitely a great reason.

Break the content down into smaller articles, blog posts, social media posts, or even ebooks/reports to sell.
