Facebook Timeline – The Tour

We were lucky enough to be invited to the F8 Facebook Developers Conference via Live Stream and have to say we were very excited by the new look “Timeline” which is to roll out on Friday 30th September.  Here’s what it will look like when you get yours.  It’s like a story book of your life — or at least the online documented parts of your life!

If you want to get yours ahead of the crowd or you just want to see what it will look like for you and some of the features we have recorded a video of Facebook Timeline just for you

If you want to go ahead and get your own advance copy of Facebook Timeline we show you how to do that in the video but it is always useful to have the steps written down so here goes:-

You need to become what is called an ‘open graph developer‘ – even if you’re just looking to dabble. But there are a few things to note (disclaimer here)  You probably don’t want to do this unless you’re actually a developer. You should expect that there will be bugs!   Only you will see your timeline at first but it will automatically go public on or after 30th September.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Log into Facebook
  • Open a new tab in your browser and go to http://facebook.com/developers
  • Allow the developer permission

If you haven’t already verified your Facebook account with either a mobile phone number or credit card number, you’ll be asked to do so before you can try the new features.

Ensure you give your App a name and complete the App Namespace with no numbers or characters and no less than 7 letters.  Yoy will then be taken to your App Page where you need to click on the ‘open graph button

You will have to go through several pages, saving and going on to the next until you get to Save & Finish.

This is what your new Timeline will look like

We have been looking at the comments on the new look of Facebook.  There will always be those people that like it and those that won’t.  You just can’t please everyone!

We would like to give credit to the content of this blog post and the video to Jo Barnes and to Techcrunch.com Not forgetting Geoffrey Moffett who invited us to the Live Stream of F8.
