What Marketers Need To Know About GDPR

What Marketers Need To Know About GDPR

eu-2891828_1280What Marketers Need To Know About GDPR : GDPR meaning General Data Protection Regulation – the much talked about European Law which takes effect on 25th May 2018 and “designed to give greater protection to an individual’s personal information and how it’s collected, stored and used.

As marketers we cannot bury our heads in the sand and pretend it’s not going to happen or that we don’t need to register… if you are collecting and using data and it belongs to someone in the EU (European Union) then you have to have a policy and Registration is a statutory requirement.  Every organisation that processes personal information must register with the ICO (UK based businesses).

Obviously as with any new legislation or regulation there’s bound to be confusion so our message is just find out for yourself (do your own due diligence) and do what you need to do for your business to remain compliant.

GDPR and the Marketer’s Dilemma

Seth Godin is the “grandfather” of the online marketing world and has some wise words of advice for Marketers ….

“Realise that the GDPR is a net positive for people with something to say, something to sell or something to change. Because the noise will go down and trust will go up. Embrace this insight and you can avoid the hit and run low-yield spam that marketers have backed themselves into”

  • Talk to people who want to be talked to
  • Market to people who want to be marketed to
  • Because anticipated, personal and relevant messages will always outperform spam.
  • And spam is in the eye of the recipient.
  • In two simple words: Ask First

Will we be compliant with the GDPR by 25 May 2018?

Yes. We (Chris and Susan Beesley & Chris and Susan Beesley Limited) will be compliant on or before 25 May 2018, the date the GDPR comes into force in the EU. We have a deep commitment to the privacy and security of your data, as well as your ability to access it. Maintaining compliance to GDPR constitutes no significant change in our philosophy or business practices

Because the spirit of the GDPR is in line with our business philosophy and values, with an emphasis on customer data security and privacy, compliance with the GDPR has been more a matter of codifying our policies than a radical shift in our business model. Data privacy is of paramount importance to us.

Whilst we will be compliant, it is the responsibility of the individual provider of the programs we promote or are affiliated with to ensure that their business is compliant.

A Journey Of A Thousand Miles

A Journey Of A Thousand Miles

A Journey Of A Thousand MilesA journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step : The quotation is from Chapter 64 of the Tao Te Ching teaching that even the longest and most difficult ventures have a starting point; something which only begins with one first step.

Here’s our modern take on the saying complete with donkeys to help make the point

We’re ready to take your hand  whenever you’re ready to take the first step

A Journey Of A Thousand Miles Santorini Video

Tao Te Ching – Lao Tzu – chapter 64

Peace is easily maintained;
Trouble is easily overcome before it starts.
The brittle is easily shattered;
The small is easily scattered.

Deal with it before it happens.
Set things in order before there is confusion.

A tree as great as a man’s embrace springs from a small shoot;
A terrace nine stories high begins with a pile of earth;
A journey of a thousand miles starts under one’s feet.

He who acts defeats his own purpose;
He who grasps loses.
The sage does no act, and so is not defeated.
He does not grasp and therefore does not lose.

People usually fail when they are on the verge of success.
So give as much care to the end as to the beginning;
Then there will be no failure.

Therefore the sage seeks freedom from desire.
He does not collect precious things.
He learns not to hold on to ideas.
He brings men back to what they have lost.
He helps the ten thousand things find their own nature,
But refrains from action.

~ Translation by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English

We thought Santorini would be a perfect place to film the video training since everywhere you go there involves many steps from ten to hundreds ….

But the message is just as it says in the Tao Te Ching–  A journey of a thousand miles starts under one’s feet [a step at a time]

Whether you are starting something new such as a hobby or a new job it begins with one single step … in the case of people looking at becoming an entrepreneur or starting a new business it’s exactly the same
