SEO Basics (Taking The Spooky Out of SEO)
The very word “SEO” (Search Engine Optimisation) scares the hell out of people – we know it did for us when we first got started online and since it is Halloween what better time to share with you some SEO basics.
This will be a two part article so watch out for part 2 later this week.
Explanation of SEO Basics
A lot of us get SPOOKED with all the stuff there is to know about what’s involved in SEO and just breaking it down into the SEO basics will make it much easier to understand. Small ‘bite sized’ pieces of information are far more effective in our experience that a ton of information jammed into a blog post that is just too complicated to understand.
We want to keep it simple and break it down for you in a way that’s easy to understand even if you are a complete beginner (when we got started we didn’t even know about the basics of Google Search for example let along what was meant by keywords – just saying so you know you are not alone if you are just getting started with the skills of online marketing).
Here are some very simple SEO basics strategies you can put into place to start getting more traffic. Here’s WHY :-
More traffic = More leads….. and More leads = More sales.
We think we can all agree there is nothing too SPOOKY about getting more SALES!
The Two Parts of SEO Basics
Essentially, there are two parts to SEO – called On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO.
On-Page SEO – On-Page SEO has to deal with the actual content on your website.
Off-Page SEO – Off-page SEO is all about links and you need lots of links from other websites.
In this post we are going to be talking about On-Page SEO Basics
One thing to note about On-Page SEO is websites are not what Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc., rank. They rank each individual web page. So each of the pages on your website has the ability to rank in the search engines.
TIP: When making a blog post, video, or article, try to target a specific keyword or keywords you would like to rank for in the search engines, because each of your pages has the ability to rank for a specific keyword or keywords. (If you are not familiar with what a keyword is, it is what someone types into the search engines.)
The Free Google Keyword Tool is great for finding what keywords people are looking for.
Here’s what it looks like when you go there
They have a good “how to” section on using the tool if you are not sure how it works.
This video also shares the relevance of “search” and the Google Keywords Tool
The search engines like longer articles. If possible try and make your blog posts between 400 and 500 words, having the keyword or keyword phrase in your article four to six times.
Make sure to put your keyword(s) in your title, first sentence, last sentence, and in the alt tags of the image on your post. This will let the search engines know that your article is relevant to this keyword(s). Show them it’s important.
We’re talking here about SEO Basics so we are going to keep it very simple.
